Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
When some students enter university, they have poor study habits. Some people think that the university should require students to take courses on study habits.
Upon entering universities, students might get overwhelmed by an environment that is totally different from that in high school. Regarding what kind of help should be provided to freshman year students, various ideas are brought up. Giving lectures on study habits is a method much discussed. Some argue that such lectures will only waste students’ time; however, I contend that those lectures can aid studentstremendously.
To start, good study habits are essential elements for successful students. Despite variables such as family background that allow students to accept expensive extra curriculum tutoring or intellectual levels, students who receive roughly the same amount of guidance and spend enough time studying can still give much diversified academic performances. The reason of such differences shall be study habits. Specifically, lots of students fail to recognize the significance of preview and review, and only rely on the limited time during class to study. They do not understand that repetition can help them properly understand the knowledge and leave better impression ontheir minds.
Furthermore, studying in universities and studying in high schools are not exactly the same thing, and students need to be lectured to see the discrepancy. High school teachers often give students detailed guidance and explanation for all the key points students should master, and even practical study plans for students to follow. Nevertheless, in universities that have the feature of allowing students to find their own interest in study, professors could be only giving outlines and explain things they reckon hard for the students to grasp. Bye to the so-called key points and study plans, students are on their own during their adventure to pass the exams. Hence, study habits play a pivotal role here, for students need to make their own plans and implement their own study and exam strategy.
Admittedly, it is inarguably true that some extraordinary students do not need such lectures, because they have their own efficient study habits. And attending such lectures would seem to waste their time. Yet, students can always gain some useful points through lectures to optimize their methods. Not to mention thatstudy habits lectures can be made optional, so students can make their own choice.
To conclude, offering study habits lectures bring students a great deal of merits, from which they can benefit in the course of their life.
