You are helping to select a leader for a student organization or a group. Do you think a person's honest is the most important characteristic for being a leader?
Leaders of all kinds should possess various qualities in order to thrive together with the team. Persistence, passion, confidence and personal charisma are ought to be named. However, when it comes to the question of whether honesty is the most essential characteristic for a leader of a student organization, I would definitely stand on the opposite side that it is by no means the ultimate trait for being an excellent leader, there are other crucial elements should also be taken into consideration. My reasons and examples are best illustrated as follows.
To begin with, being able to communicate well with the members is another vital quality for becoming a successful leader of the student organization. It is a common phenomenon that once the connections among different components of an engine appear rough, the whole engine might stop or break down. The same is true of the relationship among leaders and their team members. If the leader has no idea of what his fellows are considering or refuses to accept disagreeable advice from below, he would probably lose the trust and prestige from his dearest partners. This point is best shown in my own example. When I was a senior in college, I was selected to be the team leader in my English debate club. There was one time when we had to prepare for an important national debate competition, I required all my members to search for the information that were related to the debate topic. Yet, some of the students suggested that in order to save time, there is no need for all of the students to do the research, the rest team could look into the competitor’s debating style and drafted a plan to better fight back. Unwise as me, I did not listen to them patiently and discuss the issue thoroughly. Otherwise, I insisted all of them to do the research, and it turned out I was totally wrong, the competition was a sadly failure. Therefore, it vividly demonstrates the significance of relating well with group members.
Further, it is also essential for leaders of student organizations to be passionate about the work and set examples for their fellow members. In most cases, numerous student organizations are associated with social matters such as volunteer programs and philanthropic activities. Leaders of the student organizations are supposed to be fervent about the career they are engaging, which can be contagious to their members and help bring the best results for the program. If leaders are not wholeheartedly devoted in charitable activities, there will be surly a lack of energy and enthusiasm among his fellow members. To illustrate, there is a student organization called Bring Me Hope, targeting to help orphans in rural areas. Emma, the founder of the organization puts all her love into helping those kids in need. She holds lectures telling students the tough situation orphans are confronted with; she hands out flyers to invite more people to join the meaningful trip; she even knocks on every shop in the street to ask for sponsoring. Emma is so crazy about her club that it draws great attention from a broad range of students on campus. Up to now, Bring Me Hope has been the largest student organization and its influence has produced a far-reaching impact on local orphans’ life. It is undeniable that the leaders’ attitudes guide the members to reach a more influential consequence.
To put it in a nutshell, it is true being honest is an indispensable quality for a leader, whether a leader has good communication skills and is resolved to the matter he is dealing with, cannot be neglected as an effective leader.
