Task 1
The table describes the changes of people who went for international travel in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005. (million).
Task 2
Some people think that it is more important to plant more trees in open area in towns and cities than build more housing. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:
In recent years, global urbanization has been advancing at a staggering speed, one evidence of which could be found in the fact that an increasing number of housing are being constructed in major cities and towns, occupying a vast expanse of urban land. Under such circumstances, some people argue that it is more beneficial to plant more trees instead of building more housing in urban open areas. Personally, I tend to side with the view.
Undoubtedly, planting trees in open areas would be a cost-effective solution to the main environmental problems cities are suffering from. Firstly, trees could greatly improve cities’ air quality. For instance, owing to private car use and industrial pollution, many major cities without adequate green space are frequently exposed to air pollution. Some are even facing severe smog problems. Scientific research has shown that tress can help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Secondly, trees can also effectively reduce noise pollution. Planted at strategic points in cities, trees can abate major noises from freeways and airports.
Another noticeable benefit is that trees could provide better living environment for citizens. Trees will make towns and cities a more comfortable and vibrant place to live. With more trees planted in open areas, citizens would enjoy better health conditions, as well as lowering the risk for certain diseases, particularly respiratory problems such as asthma. Furthermore, trees are an integral part of urban landscape. More green space endows a city with more energy and attractiveness, giving citizens the opportunity to get close to nature and to take a break from tiring city life.
Additionally, one fact that cannot be ignored is that housing supply has exceeded demand in many cities. Still, some real estate developers are building excessive housing out of profit-seeking purposes, which takes up large quantities of valuable urban land. If we could replace those unnecessary housing with more trees or other green plants, it will undoubtedly be beneficial to a city’s sustainable development.
Overall, I believe that it is fairly essential to plant more trees in open areas in cities rather than build more unnecessary housing.
