Throughout history, mankind has industriously brought new changes and developments to this world and to our civilized society. Particularly, the speed at which we progress is boosted exponentially after industrialization. Under this circumstance, some optimists contend that at this trend, we humans can solve the most important problems in our society during our own lifetime. However, I hold the opposite view and cannot concur.
Initially, the protection of environment still has a long way to go. Albeit the small steps we already took in terms of preserving the environment, a list of incidents remind us that our technology is not yet mature enough to solve most problems. Let me just name a few: no animals that suffered extinction have been brought back to nature, although the technology of clones was invented decades ago; oil leakage has always been a headache, because no effective way has been put forward to clean the ocean thoroughly once it has been stained by black sticky petrol.
Further, if the year 2020 has taught all humans anything at all, it should be a common lesson: knowledge we have about viruses might be scarcer than we thought. The discovery of antibiotics and many other medical milestones saved millions of lives, yet our hands are still tied when faced with a new virus bestowed by nature, Covid-19, for example. Tens of thousands of lives are taken away, along with the once prosperous daily life. Instead, shut down and medical masks are starting to shape our daily routines. Who knows what other 'surprises' that nature has prepared for us in our lifetime?
Last but not least, despite the continuous improvements politicians and activists brought to the systems of modern society, unbalanced distribution of resources and disparity are something that can hardly be shaken off. While the rich get richer, the poor get stuck. With the limited resources that the earth provides, no matter how much productivity can be promoted, people's desire for material life is like a black hole that can never be filled. Even in the most developed countries, people who suffer from illness, poverty and inequality are no news. We seem destined to fight against each other, living under the same sky.
All in all, I argue that the statement that the most important problems in our society can be solved during our own lifetime is nothing more than an empty slogan.
