Governments should provide financial support to artists.

As the cultural heritage of mankind, arts embody not merely human intelligence and creativity, but also unique traditions. Unfortunately, many people argue that compared with support for economy, arts should not be sponsored by government. In my opinion, this idea is biased and short-sighted. In order to pass arts down from generation to generation, arts should receive the government’s support.

To begin with, government support helps preserve traditional art form. Today, many legacies of our ancestors are facing a crisis due to the neglect of younger people. Taking Chinese traditional music as an example. Despite its history of thousands of years, young artists tend to show more passion in modern art forms including popular hip-hop and rap. Also, Popular music is often performed on many TV programs. The trend is that ethnic and minority music are put less and less emphasis by the public. It must be noted that traditional music genres such as Peking opera and minority music is precious intangible heritage. Therefore, government is obliged to invest in arts especially in traditional music, painting etc. If financial assistance arrives, some young painters might have the impetus to take up this traditional art form, and then more exhibitions will be held to attract people’s attention. Especially young people, they begin to cherish the essential qualities encompassed in traditional art and may even begin to give their own support.

Besides, given more official funds, national arts will have the opportunity to be accepted by the world. Outstanding artists or art groups might be sponsored on many international tours. Diversified art forms should be recognized by the public. It is government’s responsibility to preserve art forms. As long as a dynamic and effective state sponsorship system could be built and further developed, artists will be inspired and art forms will be appreciated by all ordinary citizens in the nation.
