To survive the fierce competition in the market and to maximize its profits, many companies would set aside a large amount of money to improve themselves, like providing training courses to employees, or investing in R&D of products to attract consumers’ attention. Some people claim that companies can pour money into the leading-edge technology and take advantage of it to improve employees’ efficiency. However, I firmly believe that companies can derive the most benefits from providing employees with a comfortable working environment.
First and foremost, a favorable a comfortable working environment can increase productivity. A cozy working environment can definitely lift workers spirit. Since it is verified by numerous studies that people working in cheerful mood would be more likely to generate great ideas, work out solutions to problems, maintain a positive attitude toward work and communicate effectively with colleagues, their working productivity can be promoted to a great extent. For example, many big companies like Google, Facebook are sparing no effort to create a stimulating workplace for their employers, from providing a worry-free working zone for their employees to equipping offices with gym and entertainment rooms. In such workplaces, workers are allowed to work at anywhere they want and chat with others freely, instead of being confined and restricted in small cubicles. They can also let off steam and take a good rest after hours of hard work to refresh their mind. It is undoubtedly that they would work with passion and make great contributions to the company.
Besides, excellent working environment can generate strong loyalty from the workforce. What matters when people decide whether to stay in a company and work for it for long is more often their satisfaction in the work and company? Companies investing money on improving employees’ working conditions gives out a signal to workers that they are respected and that their feelings are valued, providing them a sense of satisfaction and belonging. They would be more vigorous and passionate about their work, and be less likely to feel bored, which is of great significance to the long-term development of a company, since any reduction in absenteeism and turnover can decrease the cost of recruiting and training of new employees. My friend Tomas is a case in point. The company he works for is quite spacious and beautiful, with state-to-class sports facilities and excellent cafeteria providing delicious foods. He often tells me that he is so fond of his company that he would even go to company on weekends to kill time and have fun with friends.
Admittedly, I also notice that new technologies with advanced features and functions can boost employees’ working efficiency. For example, a devoted employee may be driven crazy by a sudden computer shutdown before he saves his unfinished document, which he has spent a whole day on. This kind of annoying trouble can be avoided if the company can invest money in updating its computers. However, given that technology is updated continuously and that it is never an easy job for people to learn and apply new technologies, an extra burden would be posed on employees if they are required to use new technologies.
From what has been discussed above, I can safely draw a conclusion that compared to investing money in technology, employees’ workplace can bring more benefits and should be given top priority, since people working in cozy environment would be more loyal to the company and more productive.
