The given bar chart illustrates the disparity in the proportion0of boys and girls, ranging from 5 to 14 years old, who take part in five various activities in Australia in the space of 14 days.

As we can see from the bar chart, the biggest gender difference is found in the activity of cycling, in which 60% of boys participate, compared with 40% of girls. This is the similar case in skateboarding, which means 40% of boys enjoy it while nearly 30% of girls do. In terms of computer games, more boys than girls also prefer it, with 80% and 70% respectively.

By contrast, equal number of boys and girls watch DVD within the two weeks, with a high of 90%. The only activity in which girls outnumber boys is arts and crafts, with girls exceeding their counterparts by merely 10%.

Overall, more boys prefer outdoor activities than girls do, though the both groups are fond of watching DVD. (159 words)

TASK 2

一些人认为应当鼓励年轻人在社区做无偿工作,对个人以及社区的利弊讨论。

类似考题

20070512  Some people believe that some unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (e.g. working in a charity, improving the relationship of neighbourhood or teaching sports to children) To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People have come to realize the development of the local community, though the mass media cover stories and breakthroughs on a larger scale. And accordingly, many citizens emphasize that young adults should be required to serve for free within a certain period of time in the community that they inhabit. I concur with this advocate and believe more benefits can be yielded.

Voluntary work in the residing area can bring a win-win situation on the part of the young generation as well as the local community. For the latter, the running expense can be curtailed due to young adults’ participation in some chores, such as doing some carpentry, repairing taps and weeding in the garden. And equally importantly, young dwellers can feel a sense of belonging and a sense of responsibility in the process of communicating with people from different walks of life and contributing to the maintenance of local facilities, as they would gradually be aware of how important roles they can play in others’ lives as well as in their own. In this sense, free service offered by young people thus can be advantageous to the harmonious development of the local community.

The merits mentioned above do not stop opponents from pointing out the inconvenience accompanied with this volunteering. They hold that young people’s life and work are likely to be negatively influenced or disrupted as these young man may be summoned at some inappropriate moment or may be annoyed about too many requirements involved. However, this problem would be tackled through mutual communication and sound coordination with people in the neighbourhood.

In light of the above discussion, I maintain that young adults can improve their multifaceted skills and embrace a better life if they do voluntary in the community where they dwell and the community having these young helpers can function economically well both in the short and long term.  (317 words)
