题目Maintaining public libraries is a waste of time and is not necessary. since computer technology is now replacing their function. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The advanced computer technology is playing a significant role in the modern society, and some people therefore believe that it can supersede public libraries some day while keeping the latter becomes meaningless. In my opinion, despite the fact that computers do make reading seem to be easier, I still believe the maintenance of public libraries is necessary.
It is true that computer technology has brought much convenience to readers so that reading in libraries is no longer the only choice. For example, the digital books backed by the computer technology make reading more accessible and portable since users or readers do not have to go to the library to find something to read, instead, provided access to the Internet, they can start to read almost all the materials posted online anytime and anywhere just with their smart phones, whether these be novels or journal articles.
However, appealing as digital reading may be, I do not think computer technology can supersede public libraries altogether and we cannot therefore suddenly come to the conclusion that there is no need to keep them. For one thing, libraries are not restricted to offer different kinds of books for people to choose. Instead, it is a multi-functional complex which provides an environment for reading or doing research, something that is lacking in the digital world, and not even to mention that not all the books especially those ancient and precious writings can be found in reading websites. for another, libraries, as public facilities that are supported or even established by governments, are also an institution to preserve the cultural wealth of all nationalities. It bears the duty of preserving human cultural heritage, developing information resources and participating in social education, while any of these can be hardly achieved by computer technology.
In conclusion, I would argue that it is radical to say that continuing public libraries wastes our time, on the contrary, I believe we still need libraries as their functions to mankind even in today cannot be replaced by computer technology totally.
