Do you agree or disagree with the school policy that in order to improve the writing skills, all first-year students should be required to take writing courses which involve writing several essays and compositions on a variety of topics in their first year of college even if it is not the field of their study.
In my opinion, college freshmen should be required to take writing courses because actually it’s already happening. Many universities have made writing courses an essential part of their educational systems. Students should feel lucky to have such courses since almost every subject need them to write. If they could utilize the method they learn from this course to write and polish their papers, hopefully also ask some help from the writing instructor, they’ll get to smoothly pass the course and successfully graduate. More importantly, writing is a perfect way to train for an organizational and logical mindset. To one degree or another, a person’s writing skills reflect the level of his or her critical thinking. Because it covers a wide range of subjects and combines writing with academic, moral and social issues, students have to read extensively and critically to develop their own viewpoints. Thus, it improves the way students think and express themselves.
When making a purchase, some buyers prefer to bargain with the seller. Other buyers prefer to buy a product at the buyer’s fixed price. Which do you prefer and why? Use specific reason to support your answer.
Well it’s a no-brainer everyone loves a bargain and everything is negotiable. Especially when I feel that the product is overly priced, I’ll try to get the seller lower the price to make sure I don’t get ripped off. Even if I end up spending, I feel like I have saved myself some cash. I mean, I'm a student who doesn’t have a regular job and any reliable source of income, so I’m usually on a tight budget, while at the same time I need to spend money on a lotta things, like paying tuition, covering my living expenses, you know things like room and board, utility and stuff like that. So saving up some money helps reduce financial burdens for my family. Another part I love about bargaining is that I just enjoy negotiating with people, which is also a part of the travel experience. Not just I feel good when I get such a good deal, it’s also a chance to talk and connect to people especially when I was traveling.
Suppose your university has a tight financial budget, which one of the following areas would you suggest the school cut budget in, sports clubs (like skiing club) or academic clubs (like speech and debate club)?
Personally, I would suggest to cut budget in academic clubs. For me, I am a sport person and kind of athletic, so I really crave such clubs to join. The most important reason why I want to convince the school that this is still something worth investing some money into is academic clubs can be run without funding, however, some sports may require certain conditions and environment, so students don’t have the opportunities to do those on their own. For example, skiing club may need to rent a instructor and staff to drive you to the nearby slopes, even communal skis and gear provided for beginners. With enough budget, the school could organize a variety of both outdoor and indoor activities for students to participate in, which is really beneficial in various aspects.
Do you agree or disagree: young people now are less socially active and engage in less social activities than people in the past?
Yes I do think young people are becoming less social. As millennials spend more time on social media platforms, it’s causing them to be less social in real life. Because of social networks the interaction with other people has become effortless and people have isolated their lives behind their online identities. Although people may have hundreds or even thousands of online “friends”, they may have very few actual people in real life that they can rely on. People miss out on parties because they want to see what’s going on, on social networks, take beautiful selfies, get comments and likes and attention from online. When it comes to work, working from home is becoming a trend. I mean, why go through all the inconvenience of meeting up in person when you can simply catch up online? Therefore, face to face communication and meetings has been reduced and many of us have lost the flavor and charm to be together under one roof.
The government of your city is going to enact a new law to require people who use cell phones while walking across a street or an intersection to pay a fine. Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?
I don’t think it’s reasonable that there should be a fine for people who use their phone while crossing a street. That’s because I think, in theory it’s nice, but it’s impractical. First of all, there are just too many people in my city, and that the officers are busy dealing more important stuff. If the government does this, they’ll need to have people standing there right up the street or in front of a surveillance camera watching all the people crossing streets all day long, which is gonna be a total waste of resource. While second, sure some people are engaged with phones and put themselves and others in danger, but lots of others use their phones responsibly, aware of the surroundings, should they also be penalized? So government should look for other solutions to deal with the problem, such as regulate driving behaviors on the road or educating the public about dangers of distracted walking.
Do you agree or disagree with the statement: It is harder to be parents nowadays than in the past.
Personally I do agree that parenting is very different from parenting many years ago because it is actually harder. It’s harder because we are expected to do more with our kids than our parents did with us. Firstly, we are more involved with our children's education. Most moms today understand that their role as parents goes well beyond feeding and clothing their children, parents today are preparing their children to the future world with new challenges that even themselves are unsure what will look like, they need to work harder and harder to equip their children with knowledge and skills to survive and thrive in the modern world, they're concerned about their academics and eager to dig into their potential and cultivate diverse interests, however there can be significant costs.
Do you agree or disagree with the statement: Students should not be allowed to record lectures in class? (2018.01.28; 2019.11.03; 2017.11.18)
I disagree with this policy and I strongly believe that recording the lecture is beneficial to student’s study. To begin with, the recording would be a perfect revision material for all students. Some students may find it difficult to follow the teacher and miss some crucial knowledge in class. For instance, when the lecture is too difficult or when the professor speaks too fast, I always have trouble getting the whole picture during the lecture. By recording the lecture, students can pick up things that they have not noticed in the class. Furthermore, it’s convenient if students can review the lecture in anywhere and at anytime. students can always refer to the course by listening to the recording in their spare time, especially when they are preparing for their final exam. In consequence, it’s a time-efficient decision for both students and professors.
