Independent Writing Task |
A city wants to help teachers of its high school students (age 14-18) to improve their teaching. It is considering two plans: 1. Choose a small group of excellent teachers; these teachers will attend a class led by an expert for additional training in how to teach effectively, and they will then come back to their schools and provide that training for other teachers in school. 2. Provide additional training in teaching effectively for high school teachers, using online material that each teacher will study individually. |
Regarding how to improve the level of high school education, people have proposed various methods, such as strengthening the training of teachers. Recently, some people have pointed out that experts should be invited to train some excellent teachers, and then these teachers should be allowed to train other teachers. Others believe that it is a more efficient way to have all teachers participate in online lectures. I also think online training will be more appropriate.
First of all, online teaching is a more efficient and lower cost way. Compared to inviting experts to give offline courses repeatedly, recording the lecture and playing it when needed obviously costs less money. Not only do they save money, but the online courses are also more flexible. Teachers can choose their own suitable time to watch, and they can play it for several times to master the content they don’t understand. For high school teachers, flexible schedules are even more important. The teaching arrangement of high school is relatively tight. If teachers are required to attend classes uniformly, it may affect the daily work arrangement of the school, and online courses can effectively solve this problem. Therefore, online courses are more easily accepted by teachers and schools than offline collective teaching.
Second, when information is passed on from one to another, the original meaning will change. Letting teachers watch online courses by themselves can ensure that every teacher is directly educated by experts, while letting teachers who are educated in advance teach other teachers cannot guarantee the same effect. Everyone has their own focus and methods of learning and accepting new knowledge in the process of learning, so there is no guarantee that these teachers can maintain the same level when they finish the expert class and come back to teach other teachers. By watching and using online tutorials, it can be ensured that the courses attended by each teacher are maintained at the same level. This advantage is incomparable by letting experts train teachers, and then teachers train other teachers.
All in all, because online tutorials is more effective and costs less, and can maintain the same level, I reckon that online tutorials is a better idea when it comes to education high school teachers.
