Various qualities need to be taken into account when choosing teammates. If I were a group leader and recruiter, among honesty, social ability and communication skill, I would vote for communication skill as the required skill of my future coworkers.

First and foremost, communicating clearly is an extremely important factor in work place. When a staff fails to explain what his demands or problems are in a lucid way, other colleagues are tortured, a result of which is misunderstandings and even conflicts. What's worse, a team program whose goal does not really get across is doomed to fail since team work requires concerted efforts. Suppose that a manufacturing business manager sets a goal to provide high-quality products, but the secretary fails to pass on this information to all workers due to poor communication skill. As a result, all products are made of cheap materials. In this case, notoriety and bankruptcy is very likely to be around the corner.

Indeed, the ability to mingle with others do have advantages. In a group setting, if a newcomer knows how to socialize and quickly finds an appealing topic to start a conversation, he will fit in more smoothly. With an icebreaker, other colleagues will know at least a glimpse of the newcomer’s manners and personality and not feel uncomfortable or uneasy in greeting. However, good social skill is not indispensable when choosing a teammate since there are many stories or legends about those talents who are not gregarious but have made a great difference, among whom Albert Einstein is a good example. Introverted though he was, he changed the world through his innovative theory of relativity.

Finally, although honesty helps build trust in workplace, it is not a required quality. Generally, no one is willing to work with liars. Those who tend to tell lies are often treated with distrust and suspicion is the root cause of failure in a team project. However, hiding secrets is one kind of professional ethic, especially in industries which require confidentiality. For example, rules of confidentiality have to be abode by all lawyers and doctors. If a lawyer or doctor regards honesty as the best policy and discloses his clients’ private information to his family, he may face lawsuits. Thus, it is not justifiable for honesty to be the most important quality.

To put it in a nutshell, it is more rewarding and reasonable to give priority to communication skill rather than social skill and honesty when choosing teammates.
