Some teachers have an informal style and treat their students like friends. Other teachers have a more formal style and keep a professional distance from students. Which teaching style do you think is better for learning?

I think informal style is better for learning. First, under this kind of teaching style, students are not afraid of teachers, which means they are willing to share thoughts with teachers. That not only encourages students to ask teachers for help when facing difficult questions, students will also feel free to participate in class discussions. Second, by treating their students like friends, teachers help foster an active and relaxing atmosphere in academic lectures. This will boost students' interests and enable them to learn better.

Your university is planning to require all first-year students to take a class on how to use library resources to do research and to write papers. Do you think this is a good idea?

I don't think it's a good idea to require all first-year students to take a class on how to use library resources to do research and to write papers because they can simply go to the library’s website and learn on their own by studying online. It’s going to be more convenient since you can study anywhere and anytime you want, like the café, and also make your own schedule. Learning in this way is easy and comfortable. Therefore, you don't need to take the class throughout the semester in order to grasp how to use library resources. And not to mention that the time saved can be used to get more work done.

Some people prefer to shop regularly at the store that is close and convenient to them, even though the price might be expensive, others prefer to go for longer distance for lower prices, which do you prefer and why?

I prefer to go for longer distance for lower prices because it helps me save money. By saving money on my groceries and daily necessities, I can use the saved money to buy bigger-ticket items, like houses or apartments. Then I will have a shelter forever, without worrying about renting places to live for the rest of my life. In this way, I will be able to live on my own instead of relying on my parents, which gives me a sense of achievement. On the other hand, buying expensive goods at the store will make it really hard for me to achieve my goal. Besides, I can drive, so it’s not a hassle traveling far distance.

Some people believe that it's parent's responsibility to teach kids manners, others believe that it's the school's responsibility, which do you agree and why.

I agree that it's parent's responsibility to teach kids manners. First, parents are children's first teachers. Take my parents as examples, they've taught me a lot of manners since I was a young kid, like don't make a noise while chewing food, offer seats to the elderly people and greet people properly. My parents set up good examples for me to follow, which gradually helps me learn to behave myself. On the other hand, the teachers at school put more focus on course-related materials. Besides, there are many students in one class. It's easy for teachers to tell the whole class what good manners and etiquette are, but making sure each kid actually practices those good manners is going to be challenging. Therefore, it’s still parent’s responsibility at the end of the day.

Personally speaking, I agree with the statement that schools should teach children how to use computers when they begin primary school. And I have the following reasons. First, student can use computers to do online study. Since it doesn’t require a fixed location, students don’t need to travel to schools or libraries to study. So they can study anywhere and anytime they want, like the café, and also make their own schedule. Learning in this way is easy and comfortable.  Also, browsing online is an effective way to search for information.

When watching movies and television shows with friends and family, some people prefer that everyone remain quiet until the end. Other people enjoy talking and sharing opinions during the movies and shows. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

范文A:

Well I think we should remain quiet while watching tv with our friends and family. And I feel this way for two reasons, first of all, sharing opinions or having small talks with them will get me easily distracted from the story, and if I miss out some important details, I can’t really enjoy the movie or the show. For example, I love to watch detective movies, because I really enjoy the process of, you know, finding clues and solving mysteries on my own, so I usually ask my friends to keep quiet when they’re watching with me, and when we’re done watching, we will then discuss passionately about what we think of the movie or the show. Also, it’s distracting to other audiences in the theater. Same thing, if I have to listen to someone talking, I wouldn’t be able to pay attention to the ongoing movie, and wouldn’t have much fun.

范文B

Well, I’d love to talk with others while watching tv or movies. That’s why I love watching movies with my best friends as we share similar taste. I mean, that’s the whole point. Why don’t we just watch them alone if we don’t talk? Having a discussion about the plot and sharing our feelings towards the show will definitely make you feel more relaxed and a lot of fun. Perhaps when someone isn’t understanding the plot, It’s ok to have a bit of chit-chat to keep everyone up to speed.  By saying like I missed the lines! Can you get me up to speed about the content? Your friends help explained it a bit. On the other hand, it’s so boring to just sit and stare at the screen with no response at all. Imagine that if the movie is a total disaster, having someone to talk and roast about it will save you from boredom instead of distract you.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? To truly know about a country, it is necessary to learn a major language of this country? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

范文A:

Well, to me, language is a bonus point but not a must. Learning a new language is a challenging and time-consuming task, especially for those who don’t have immersive environment, take English learning as an example, they have to spend a lotta time and effort memorizing vocabulary, learning grammar rules which are wholly different from those of your mother tongue; it’s too big of a time commitment. There’s no need to do that. Instead, there are a lot other ways to know a country, we can watch documentaries, and TV series to learn about their ways of thinking and doing things. What’s more, in this modern society, technology so advanced, you can even use google translator to help you communicate with the locals while traveling, instead of knowing their language by yourself.

范文B

Personally, I think it is necessary to learn a major language of a country in order to truly know about this country. First of all, knowing a country in other languages, for example, u read Chinese news stories from American news coverage, for sure there are things not comprehensive and biased, unobjective or just not completely equivelant. If you want to penetrate and understand profoundly into a society, you must know how to speak their language yourself. This way/If you are fluent in someone else’s native language, you will find it easier traveling to or even living in this country, talking to the locals, experiencing local lifestyle, thus getting to know about their history and culture, traditions, rituals and customs.

Imagine that you need to find housing next semester and have found two possible apartments. The first apartment is within walking distance to campus, but the rent is a little expensive. The second apartment is farther away from campus. but the rent is more affordable. Which apartment do you think is better? Explain why.

范文A:

I would choose the more affordable one because obviously it helps reduce financial burdens for me and my family. I mean, I'm a student who doesn’t have a regular job and any reliable source of income, so I’m usually on a tight budget, while at the same time I need to spend money on a lotta things, like paying tuition, covering my living expenses, you know things like room and board, utility and stuff like that. So saving up some money should be a top priority to me. Besides, if I can walk to school within 5 min, it really saves a lot of time, which therefore could be spent on more important things, either taking classes, preparing for upcoming exams or working on assignments, handling tons of paperwork.

范文B:

I would choose the one within walking distance.
