Hello everyone! My name is Gary from the University of Queensland, Australia. Hasty but fantastic, I had a happy ending with my GRE test under the effective assistance from the academic advisors in New Channel. With the great fulfilment towards all the effort we made together, I should convey my sincere appreciation to the tutors in the New Channel, who offered me the most related studying material and awesome tips for different sections. With a small but wholehearted return, I recalled my daunting studying process of GRE and encapsulated it into some indicative studying information in this thanks letter. I hope my personal experience and suggestions, even though somehow circumstantial and biased, will contribute to the prospective students in the New Channel and bless them with a shining future both in the test and United States!
Here comes the most important part – the information of the test preparation. I undoubtedly put most of my energy in studying the verbal section. It can be a golden rule that a good GRE score comes out of the distinguished performance in the verbal section. Here I found two basic tricks in the revision, vocabularies and logic. Vocab is the bedrock of the verbal section, both for multiple choice and readings, without which the testing competence will suffer a fatal disadvantage. From my clumsy understanding, there is rarely a shortcut for the vocab improvement, while constant and assiduous memorizing process is the most effective way to get things done. As for the logical thinking, this is the process required for both vocab questions and readings. The vocab questions usually will set some keywords that allude to the internal relations of the main sentences and subordinate clauses. Extracting and highlighting the keywords can facilitate the analysing efficiency. The reading section requires heaps of training to recognize the pattern of the questions. Some of the questions are similar and lead to a same solving technique. Therefore, it is significant to follow the instructions of the advisors in the New Channel whom will provide the real-time testing technique from the latest released exam papers.
The analytical writing section is the section I prepared for the test. (Feel the trivial position of the insignificant math before the smart Chinese STEM students~~) The reason why I emphasise the essay writing is because I severely lack the sentiment of the liberal art and the relevant writing experience as an engineering student, who only know how to produce lab reports and conference papers repetitively. The writing preparation is also subjective and contingent, depending on the student’s writing competence and reading experience. Here I can only suggest the prospective students read as many English materials as they can and distil the sentiments of the materials into their own words. For a more effective approach, using writing model with some extant examples of the arguments is also beneficial to a fast learning process. However, using model cannot guarantee an outstanding mark in the essay writing and may suffer the misconduct of similarity. However, in my opinion, sufficient training of the essay writing, no matter how, can promise a score of 3 to 4, which is already enough for most of the school’s applications in the STEM (Liberal art excepted), according to the US News ranking. Therefore, I suggest not to freak out too much in this section.
As for the quantitative reasoning, I won’t talk about that because I didn’t review it and got a full mark in the test. But maybe familiarising the mathematical terms and jargons is an excellent way to sweep out the linguistic obstruction for the exam takers. The difficulty is relatively low if you study the STEM, and just in case you don’t, sufficient exercises can also lead you to the full mark because the questions are relatively similar with that in previous years.
In conclusion, my personal opinion of preparing the GRE test is adhering to the strategies taught from the advisors in the New Channel, training yourselves with the time limit and the exercise provided by the New Channel, implement the extracurricular English readings, repetitively memorizing the vocab and being relaxed to take the test. Even though I didn’t finish the whole revision at the end, but I did my best in the test and got 159 + 170 + 3.5 ever in my first time (maybe it’s the last time). I firmly believe you are way smarter than me and have way more time than I did, so don’t be panic and stick to the New Channel’s studying tips. The prestigious and promising US institutions always await you and will guarantee you a great prospect!
Lots of thanks to the New Channel and good luck!
