我们在做阅读题的时候一般都会默认定位句就是出题句，定位到了某句话就开始仔细阅读句子意思，试图找到答案。可是，真的没有例外吗？我们在雅思写作的评分规则里有一项是Coherence and Cohesion，要求大家能够熟练地使用各种衔接手段，使文章连贯流畅。其中为了避免重复，我们会用到一些代词来代指前文出现过的信息。雅思阅读所选取的文章都是质量很高的学术文章，所以在表达上一定也会用到类似的方式，所以我们需要的有些答案可能不在定位句，而是在前面的句子中。下面我们就来看看指代在阅读题中的具体体现。
首先我们来看C12 The history of glass中的填空题：
Until 476 AD: Only the 5 ........... ............................... knew how to make glass.
此题通过特殊定位词476AD非常容易定位到文章中的这句话：However, they guarded the skills and technology required to make glass very closely, and it was not until their empire collapsed in 476 AD。同时我们通过对题干的分析可以知道，此题答案应该是表示“人”的名词。在定位句中表示人的是人称代词“they”，词性上不符合答案要求，所以我们必须知道这里的they到底指代的是谁。要知道这一信息，我们就要去前文中找。前面一句说：The secret of glass making was taken across Europe by the Romans during this century. 所以they代指的应该是这句话里的the Romans，答案就应该填Romans。
这类现象不止会出现在比较简单的填空题中，较难的单选题里也会有，例如在C10 Museums of fine art and their public中：
34 According to the writer, the ‘displacement effect’ on the visitor is caused by
A the variety of works on display and the way they are arranged.
B the impossibility of viewing particular works of art over a long period.
C the similar nature of the paintings and the lack of great works.
D the inappropriate nature of the individual works selected for exhibition.
题干中也有一个带引号的特殊定位词 ‘displacement effect’，大部分同学都应该能找到定位句：This 'displacement effect' is further heightened by the sheer volume of exhibits. 可是这句话讲到的是展出品的量“sheer volume”，在四个备选项中没有一个谈到volume的，感觉从这个定位句中我们并不能确定答案。我们仔细观察一下这句话就会发现，其实这句话已经不是次出现‘displacement effect’了，因为前面出现了this这个指示代词，这表示在前一句话中虽然没有直接给出，但是其实已经出现了displacement effect这个意思了。我们来看看前一句话提到了什么信息：“The visitor may then be struck by the strangeness of seeing such diverse paintings, drawings and sculptures brought together in an environment for which they were not originally created.” 本句中的“diverse paintings, drawings and sculptures” (各种绘画和雕塑作品) 可以对应选项A中的“the variety of works”；同时也提到了这些作品被一起放在了一个并非最初创造的环境中，也就对应的“the way they are arranged”, 这句话里提到的信息可以对应在选项A中给出的两个原因。
跟之前的填空题一样，我们看到单选题对应的定位句也会出现指代现象，这就说明这种情况在雅思阅读的各类题型中都可能出现，大家在解题过程中千万要牢记定位句不一定就是出题句，特别是当定位句里出现了类似人称代词或是指示代词时，重点很有可能要前移。
