PTE阅读中的各个题型，排序题虽然总分值不如填空题大，但是相对来说对词汇的要求较低，是考生在PTE阅读中可以通过技巧提分明显的一道提醒。它通常考察学生对段落展开的语言手段把握。在排序题的入门方法学习中，同学们都会使用排除法去找到首句。因为我们知道一个段落首句是不应该出现逻辑连接词连接上文，或者是出现代词去指代上文内容，那么就可以通过排除包含【连结词】，【指示代词】和【人称代词】的句子，从而实现快速找到首句的目的：

A.  This natural process results in millions of tons of hippo dung entering Africa's aquatic ecosystems every year.

B.  However, as distasteful as that might seem, the hippos' deposites actually serve an important ecological function.

C.  Lumbering out of the water at night, these herbivores graze on tropical grasses and consume 80 to 100 pounds in one meal.

D.  By daybreak, having eaten their fill, they return to their daytime resting area to rest, digest and, eventually, eliminate.

E.  A common hippopotamus can spend up to 16 hours a day immersed in rivers and lakes.

  例如在本题中，A句排除This，B句排除however，C句排除these, D句排除their和they， 所以本题的首句自然而然是E句。这是在做排序题的时候最基础的入门方法。但同学们随着练习量的增多，发现能够用此方法直接排除首句的题目越来越少，因为出现的各种各样的变种，使得我们没有办法简单粗暴的直接找到首句。而这种情况都有一种共同特征：即每一句话都拥有一些需要去排除的信息词，导致最后没有一句话可以用作是句。所以接下来我们逐条分析一下常见的几种特殊情况：

排除代词的特殊情况：

A.  The fear of criticism from colleagues, friends and family is the main factor that obstructs a change in their employment situation.

B.  However, most of these workers would not consider career alternatives.

C.  It seems that the lack of psychological reward is the reason for their dissatisfaction.

D.  Despite the financial stability a high salary brings, research has shown that the majority of top earners are not happy in their jobs.

E.  Interestingly, it is not the risk of a decrease in salary which prevents this move.

快速扫描本题后，我们会发现每一句话都有类似their，they之类的代词，那么按照我们学习的方法，岂不是没有句子当句话了？所以关键是没有灵活的去看待指代信号。诚然，我们知道当一个句子需要去指代上文时，通常会出现代词。但是反过来，一个句子出现了代词真的说明，这个代词一定是指代的上一句话的内容吗？比如： He gives me his book. 这句话里面出现了人称代词his，但是指代的是这句话的主语he，而不是上一句的某些内容。所以关键点在于：我们在排除代词所在句子的时候，还要观察这个代词是否指代本句前面部分的名词，如果是的话，这句话就不能排除了。通俗一点讲，要看句子里的代词是否能在本句中被消化掉。

  现在，让我们重新仔细阅读一下每一句话，观察哪一个句子中的代词在本句被消化掉了。在D句中：the majority of top earners are not happy in their jobs. 我们可以得出这里的their其实就是指代的全面的top earners， 所以本句中是没有什么信息表示有上文的，那么此句就是我们的首句了

转折信号词的排除情况：

A.  For one thing, the use of language is universal ——all normally developing children learn to speak at least one language and may learn more than one

B.  It is wrong, however, to exaggerate the similarity between language and other cognitive skills, because language stands apart in several ways.

C.  But just the opposite is true ——language is one of the most complexes of all human cognitive abilities.

D.  Because everyone is capable of learning to speak and understand language, it may seem to be simple.

E.  By contrast, not everyone becomes proficient at complex mathematical reasoning, few people learn to paint well, and many people cannot carry a tune.

在本题中， B,C,E三句话分别用however，but和by contrast表达转折信号，所以这里同学们会下意识的统统把三句话给排除掉，最后对答案的时候发现，本题首句就在这三句话之中的某一句，所以同学们就纳闷了，到底是为什么？

和刚刚讲解代词的特殊情况一样，如果我们要排除一个转折关系词，也必须确保题目句子中的确有一句话和当前句子构成转折关系。我们可以看到C句中的most complexes和D句中的simple构成了一对反义替换，所以D在C前面，C句不能是首句。E句中的not everyone和A句中的all children...构成一对转折关系，所以A在E的前面，则E不能构成转折。而B句虽然有一个however，我们在其他句子中并找不到哪一个句子能和它在意思上构成转折关系。B句的意思为：然而，去夸大语言和其他认知技能的相似性是错误的。其他的四个句子没有一个句子的意思是：夸大...是正确的，或者我们应该去夸大...相似性。 所以此题B句很有可能是首句。因为排序题的段落中不一定是一个独立的段落，有的题目是从一个文章里节选出来的一个段落，从理论上来讲是存在上文的。

  综上所述，同学们在利用连结词和代词进行排除首句的时候，也要注意上述的两种情况，避免开头就错误了，从而出现连环失误拿不到分。
